Compositor estadounidense. Estudió en las universidades de Harvard y Yale, vivió en Italia y Alemania (1925–33) y más tarde fue profesor principalmente en la Universidad de Princeton (1935–45, 1953–65). Su interés precoz en el neoclasicismo fue desplazado 1953 por su adopción del
serialismo. Entre sus obras figuran las óperas
The Trial of Lucullus (1947) y
Montezuma (
